Variable Fonts And New Text Styling Options For Divi 5

I am excited to announce variable font support and many new text styling options for Divi 5!

Divi 5 now supports the latest Google Fonts collection, including variable fonts and the dozens of new controls they provide. If you aren’t familiar with variable fonts, keep reading because they are amazing.

We also added many new text styling options that allow you to create magazine-style text layouts, style dropcaps, and give you more control over text stroke, spacing, and more. When it comes to typography, Divi 5 now has it all.

There’s much to explore, so let me jump into the builder and give you the full tour. 👇

Variable Fonts and Font Axis

Variable fonts are wonderful. Unlike traditional fonts, they give you fine-tuned control of many things, such as weight, slant, width, height, roundness, shape, and so much more.

Depending on the variable font you choose, Divi will give you a new set of controls, allowing you to make each font your own and smoothly transition between each axis.

New Variable Font Controls

Traditional fonts come with a few variations, such as bold and italic. Variable fonts, on the other hand, are adjustable. Instead of picking from a small subset of variations, you can adjust the font style using new controls that give you wide adjustment ranges.

For example, instead of picking between the thin, regular, medium, and bold font weights, you can slide through a random range of 200-900. That’s 796 new font weights!

But variable fonts give you control over so much more than just weight. Depending on the variable font you choose, you’ll see many new options.

New Text Styling Options

In addition to the many new options that variable fonts introduce, we also added new base-level settings to all title and body font option groups.

  1. Text Columns – Create magazine-style column layouts without separating text into different containers. By creating columns with CSS, text flows naturally through each column and looks great on every device.
  2. Drop Caps – We added a new drop caps tab to the body text option group, which allows you to create and style drop caps in all modules.
  3. Text Direction – The new text direction settings allow you to create text that lines up on a vertical axis. It opens up many interesting new layout opportunities.
  4. Stroke Position – We recently added gradient text and text strokes to Divi 5. This small follow-up lets you control the stroke position (either center or outside). When placing the stroke outside, it won’t clip the text, which is typically preferred.
  5. Capitalization – We separated text styling and capitalization settings and added the full range of capitalization options.
  6. Paragraph & List Spacing – These new settings let you control the space between paragraphs and the space between list items; you will find them in the body text option group.
  7. Hyphenation – Enabling hyphenation causes long words that exceed the width of the parent container to hyphenate and break to the next line, rather than breaking through the container’s boundaries.
  8. Line Wrap Style – You can now choose between different line wrap styles, which control how text breaks to new lines.
